Dhau Sagan Stotra (धौ सगं स्तोत्र): Auspicious Blessings for Good Luck

Introduction

The Bajracharya Dhau Sagan (धौ सगं) Stotra holds a significant place in Bajracharya culture, where it is chanted to invoke good luck and auspiciousness. This traditional practice is often accompanied by the offering of boiled Red Rice Sina/Tika (ह्याँगु जाकि सि न:) and Yogurt/Curd (Dhau) believed to bring blessings and positive energy. Red Rice Sina/Tika (ह्याँगु जाकि सि न:) is prepared by mixing Rice, Red Abir (or sindoor) and Yogurt. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, the commencement of a journey, or the initiation of any auspicious endeavor, reciting this stotra and sharing these offerings is a cherished ritual that symbolizes the pursuit of favorable outcomes and protection.

In Newari Bajracharya culture, during Sagan, an elder woman in the household places a Red Rice Tika on the forehead from eldest house member to youngest house member. Yogurt is offered by a woman in the house, and the person receiving it dips either their ring or middle finger into the yogurt. Men apply the yogurt to their right cheek, while women apply it to their left cheek.

Typically, the Dhau Sagan is followed by the Egg Sagan (खें सगं) ritual, which involves distributing eggs and smoked or dried fish. Read more about Egg Sagan (खें सगं).
